Austin began taking piano lessons at an early age and had always had a strong passion for music. In the mid-90’s, at around age 12, he was exposed to bands such as Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, and Nirvana. This would steer his passion from the piano to the electric guitar. He practiced and played relentlessly throughout middle school and high school. During high school, he would join the alt/hard rock band Elite. As he progressed, his tastes would evolve into heavier music, becoming an avid fan of Metallica and Megadeth. It was around his sophomore year of high school that he discovered Zakk Wylde, and his playing would be forever changed. Since then, Austin has fused a Hetfield-esque rhythmic guitar style with a screaming, vibrato Zakk Wylde sound. In 2006, he formed Apathetic Interest and began work on the debut album: Exodus of Reason. This album featured a broad spectrum of Austin’s styles and influences, from progressive metal, to hard rock to blues rock. Austin’s writing on the forth coming album, Bound by Chosen Path, shows a more focused style. He is on a mission to fuse the epic instrumentation and emotion of progressive metal with the razor sharp edge of thrash metal.
