Apathetic Interest is a progressive and thrash metal band based out of the San Francisco Bay Area. Apathetic Interest’s sound is characterized by heavy, thrashy guitar riffs and blistering solos backed by brutal drum lines and powerful, aggressive and melodic vocal lines with epic orchestral arrangements.
The band had its start along Utah’s Wasatch Front in late 2006, under the name Chaos Theory. Guitarist and founding member Austin Lewis started with the song “Deception” and took flight from there.
Austin recruited lifelong friend and Consequence of Chaos guitarist Scott McPhie to be his partner in crime. In early 2007, the duo recruited bassist John Robison and drummer Scott Eley and played a 5-song set as their debut live performance.
Austin then began focusing his efforts on song writing for the debut album: Exodus of Reason. This writing centered on guitar-oriented songs with a wide range of influences from hard rock, metal, and progressive metal to blues and southern rock.
Within a matter of months, he had an album’s worth of material and the group was renamed Apathetic Interest. After a long and tedious process, Exodus of Reason was released in early 2009.
After this release, Austin began to give a more narrow focus to his writing. Songs like Exodus of Reason would be the basis for his new material. He set out on a mission to combine the epic emotions and instrumentation of progressive metal with the razor sharp precision of thrash metal. His writing now became heavily influenced by groups such as Metallica, Dream Theater and Evergrey.
After a move to the California Bay Area, Austin crossed paths with Boz Millar, a gifted song-writer and sound engineer. The two quickly made musical chemistry and began co-writing material for Apathetic Interest’s sophomore album. The two would write 12 songs and create the concept which would become the Bound by Chosen Path album.
Eventually, the band would recruit the skilled and diverse bassist, Jason Craven. His musicianship and technicality are rivaled by few bassists. Finally, Ben Bullitt would join on to add his aggressive and melodic vocals to the progressive powerhouse that is Apathetic Interest.
The band is currently in the studio completing Bound by Chosen Path. Check out the player on the home page to listen to demos of the new music.
